LASIK Brings Your Life Into Focus
Myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism are the medical terms for refractive errors. Myopia is commonly known as near-sightedness and means you can see clearly up close but not at distance. Hyperopia is commonly known as far-sightedness and means you can clearly see at distance but not up close. Astigmatism causes blur at any distance. The defocus caused by these refractive errors are from an imbalance of the cornea and lens of the eye. These refractive errors can be treated with glasses and contact lenses; however, they can be cured with LASIK.
Officially known as laser assisted in situ keratomileuses, LASIK addresses vision clarity problems related to the refractive errors of myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. LASIK has been FDA approved for over 20 years and has well documented excellent results. The treatment process involves a computer-guided femtosecond laser which creates a thin perfectly circular flap on the cornea. An excimer laser then reshapes the cornea to correct the defocus and provide perfect focus. LASIK is able to correct refractive errors much better than glasses and contacts are able to. The computer-guided lasers reshape the cornea so that it matches the lens of the eye. The new correction doesn’t slip off like a pair of glasses or rotate around like a contact lens. The perfect focus is permanently in place, allowing life to be in focus at all times.
