About LASIK

LASIK is an elegant vision correction surgery that produces astounding results and is considered by many to be the single most successful elective surgery. LASIK or “laser assisted in situ keratomileuses” has been FDA-approved in the US for over two decades. During that time, the technique has evolved to become incredibly safe and reliable. A computer-guided femtosecond laser creates a small flap in the cornea, and an excimer laser (precise enough to write letters on a strand of human hair) reshapes the cornea. LASIK is far more precise at correcting nearsightedness and astigmatism than glasses or contact lenses. This form of refractive surgery has been extensively studied with thousands of articles published on its safety and excellent results. Board-certified ophthalmologist Dr. Aaron Waite performs hundreds of LASIK surgeries every year from his Lehi, UT practice, Waite Vision, to help his patients take back their lives with clearer vision. Our premier vision-correction facility is pleased to offer services to all of northern Utah.

Ideal Candidates

Like other methods of refractive surgery, LASIK is designed to change the focus of the eye. The need to change the focus of the eye occurs when there are refractive errors (traditionally called nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism). These errors can be temporarily resolved with the use of glasses or contacts, or permanently resolved through refractive surgery. Recent studies have shown that refractive surgery is ultimately safer and healthier than the use of contact lenses. Ideal candidates for LASIK vision correction must:

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Be in great overall health
  • Be free from eye disease, infection, or injury
  • Not have severe refractive vision errors
  • Not be pregnant or breastfeeding

Procedure Technique

In preparation for LASIK surgery, your eyes will be numbed with anesthetic eye drops. Dr. Waite will then place an eyelid holder between your eyelids to prevent you from blinking during the procedure. Next, a computer-guided femtosecond laser creates a small flap in the cornea, and an excimer laser reshapes the cornea. The actual procedure only lasts a few minutes per eye. When the cornea is reshaped properly, it works better to focus light into the eye and onto the retina, providing clearer vision than before. Following the laser correction, the flap is laid back in place, where it will bond with your eye without the need for stitches. Most people can return to work within 24 hours.

What To Expect

You will need a ride home following the procedure as your eyes recover from surgery. The numbing drops used during your procedure will wear off within an hour and you may begin to feel minor discomfort or itching. It is very important that you do not rub your eyes. For the first 8 – 12 hours your eyes may water or appear bloodshot, these are normal side effects of the surgery and will subside. Nearly all patients will experience some level of improvement within 6 – 8 of surgery, with the vast majority reporting improved vision immediately. Dr. Waite will ask you to wear protective eye shields at night for a period of time following surgery to ensure that you do not rub or scratch your eyes subconsciously.

It’s always important to have realistic expectations for your vision correction surgery. The overall goal of LASIK is to reduce or eliminate your dependence on glasses or contacts, and while many patients experience dramatically clear results, it does not always guarantee perfect vision. Some patients will still need occasional reading or driving glasses after the procedure is completed and although there are many benefits to laser vision correction, there are also risks. This is why Dr. Waite uses the most advanced technology available to minimize risk and maximize accuracy.
