About Cataract Surgery
Cataract surgery is a miraculous solution to a cloudy lens that does not focus. Cataracts are relatively common because the human lens has a limited lifespan. Everyone will eventually get cataracts if they live long enough. Fortunately, the lens is replaceable through cataract surgery. Through a microscopic incision, our founder and board-certified ophthalmologist, Dr. Aaron Waite, can remove the human lens and replace it with a crystal-clear artificial lens. The new artificial lens sits in the exact position as the original lens, and it remains stable indefinitely. Because the incision is so small, no sutures are needed. Cataract surgery has been highly refined to the point where the entire procedure can be done safely in a short amount of time and with minimal discomfort. At Waite Vision in Lehi, UT, it is our supreme goal to help you enjoy your life to the fullest, with clear vision. During a consultation at our beautiful facility, our skilled staff can help you determine whether cataract surgery can help attain that goal.
Refractive Cataract Surgery
There have been huge strides in the technological advancements of the artificial lenses used in cataract surgery. Artificial lenses are crystal clear and last a lifetime. They are customizable to each patient, so you no longer need glasses after surgery. Refractive cataract surgery utilizes customized artificial lenses with the specific goal of being able to live life without glasses or contacts. Despite its complex simplicity, the human lens is difficult to replicate; however, the customized lenses can be designed to bend light to allow for both distant and near objects to be clear at the same time. This makes it possible to reverse the need for glasses, including reading glasses and bifocals. Cataract surgery can now add years of perfect vision to a person’s life.

While most patients with cataracts are typically great candidates for cataract surgery, there are a few exceptions, such as:
- If you are in poor health
- If you are pregnant or nursing
- If you have a preexisting eye disease
- If you are taking certain medications
- If undergoing surgery is not a safe option for you
While it is a rare occurrence for a patient to be ineligible for this treatment, we will discuss all your options in a private consultation at Waite Vision, before creating your treatment plan.
When removing the cataract, Dr. Waite will use one of two standard methods. Phacoemulsification, which uses ultrasound to break the lens into pieces for removal through a small incision, or extracapsular extraction, which involves removing the entire lens at once through a larger incision. The incision is made either at the far edge of the cornea or in the sclera(the white of the eye) and is also used for the placement of the implant. Small incisions tend to heal quickly and usually do not require stitches, but a large incision will need stitches to ensure that it closes and heals properly.
The exact shape and size of each implant can vary from patient to patient, but all are held in place by small flexible loops called haptics that is attached to the lens. Implants are intended to last a lifetime and are made of materials like silicone and acrylic that will not irritate your eye.
What to Expect
After your surgery has concluded, you will be given specific post-op instructions on how to care for your eyes. We can also show you how to best use eye drops as this will be required for proper healing. It is really important to not touch, rub, scratch, or press on your eye. Wearing a protective shield may be required for a short time while your eye is healing. Following a brief recovery period, you will need a driver to take you home.
Once your eye has completely healed following the surgery, your vision should be clearer. There is a possibility that, down the road, a secondary cataract will form. This occurs when the capsule that holds the new lens becomes cloudy. In such cases, a laser treatment (YAG capsulotomy) is used to make a small opening in the capsule, which clears up your vision by allowing more light to enter. This treatment takes just a few minutes to perform.
Most insurance companies will cover, at least in part, the cost of traditional cataract surgery. Refractive cataract surgery is not likely to be covered. Our Waite Vision staff will work closely with your insurance provider to determine your benefits as well as your out-of-pocket cost. This will be discussed with you prior to scheduling your surgery to allow you ample time to plan.
