LASIK (Laser Vision Correction Surgery, Laser-Assisted In-situ Keratomileusis) – Utah*

15 Procedures ( View All )

LASIK is an elegant vision correction surgery that produces astounding results and is considered by many to be the single most successful elective surgery. LASIK or “laser assisted in situ keratomileuses” has been FDA-approved in the US for over two decades. During that time, the technique has evolved to become incredibly safe and reliable. A computer-guided femtosecond laser creates a small flap in the cornea, and an excimer laser (precise enough to write letters on a strand of human hair) reshapes the cornea. LASIK is far more precise at correcting nearsightedness, farsighedness and astigmatism than glasses or contact lenses. This form of refractive surgery has been extensively studied with thousands of articles published on its safety and excellent results. Board-certified ophthalmologist Dr. Aaron Waite performs hundreds of LASIK surgeries every year from his Lehi, UT practice, Waite Vision, to help his patients take back their lives with perfect vision.  We have patients travel from all of the state of Utah and many surrounding states to come to Dr. Waite for vision correction.

Ideal Candidates

Like other methods of refractive surgery, LASIK is designed to change the focus of the eye. The need to change the focus of the eye occurs when there are refractive errors (traditionally called nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism). These errors can be temporarily resolved with the use of glasses or contacts, or permanently resolved through refractive surgery. Recent studies have shown that LASIK is ultimately safer and healthier than the use of contact lenses. Ideal candidates for LASIK vision correction are determined during a comprehensive Advanced Ocular Analysis at Waite Vision.  Ideal candidates include:

  • Healthy corneas (specifically no signs of keratoconus)
  • We hold off on vision correction during pregnancy

Procedure Technique

In preparation for LASIK surgery, your eyes will be completely numb with anesthetic eye drops. Dr. Waite will talk you through entire procedure so you feel comfortable.  You don't have to worry about moving or blinking during the procedure at all.  A computer-guided femtosecond laser creates a perfect flap in the cornea, and then an excimer laser reshapes the cornea.  The lasers track your eyes during the procedure so eye movments do not affect the treatment.  The actual procedure only lasts a few minutes per eye and is painless.  Most people can return to work by the next day.

What To Expect

It is normal for the vision to be a little blurry and for the eyes to feel mild irritation the day of the procedure.  Most patients prefer to have a ride home following the procedure. We give you eye drops to use and will check you the next day to make sure your eyes are healing well.  By the next day, most LASIK patients at Waite Vision are seeing better than 20/20 and the eyes feel comfortable.

The visual result of LASIK at Waite Vision is like a modern day miracle, but it is important to know that LASIK is a surgical procedure with inherent risk.  The risk profile for LASIK is very low.  Although extremely rare, there have been reported cases of infection after LASIK performed elsewhere.  We do everything in our power at Waite Vision to make LASIK as safe as possible.  This is why Dr. Waite uses the most advanced technology available to minimize risk and maximize accuracy.
