Pterygium

(Surfer's Eye)

Do you feel less confident because of your eye appearance? Pterygium is a non-cancerous growth that starts in the clear, thin tissue (conjunctiva) of the eye. This abnormal growth is caused by damage from UV light and is more common in places with sunny weather. A pterygium is usually progressive and will get worse over time potentially leading to vision loss from corneal scarring. They can also cause persistent discomfort. Pterygium removal at Waite Vision will leave you with a white normal appearing eye. The procedure takes about 15 minutes with minimal discomfort.

Pterygium Surgery

What happens during Pterygium removal?

Fellowship trained, board-certified ophthalmologist Dr. Aaron Waite is an expert at pterygium removal. Your eye will be completely numb prior to starting the pterygium removal. Even though you are awake during the procedure, you will not feel any pain. The pterygium is removed with specialized ophthalmic instruments. Once the pterygium removal is complete, a graft of conjunctival tissue is added to prevent recurrent pterygium growth. The graft is held in place with a special glue so no stitches are needed. The whole procedure takes about 15 minutes.

“Go meet Dr. Waite and his team. I went into the procedure very confident that my eyes were in good hands.”
