SMILE

For better vision.

You’ve probably heard of LASIK, but have you heard of SMILE? SMILE stands for small incision lenticule extraction. It is a technique where a femtosecond laser is used to remove a small round lenticule of corneal tissue from the middle layers of the cornea through a small incision, leaving you with your ideal eye prescription.

“Everything in this spectacular valley is more crisp than I could have ever imagined. I do not have to worry about cleaning off dirty glasses or taking out my contacts.”

Smile Eye Surgery Utah

How it works.

Before surgery begins, Dr. Waite will place numbing drops in your eye and a gentle eyelid holder. He will then use a computer-guided laser to place a small incision in the peripheral cornea. The laser creates a tiny segment (lenticule) in the mid-cornea. Dr. Waite removes this lenticule through a small incision created by the laser. This entire process reshapes your cornea, giving you perfect vision.

Is SMILE better than LASIK?

No. SMILE is a better fit for some eye types and lifestyles. Both procedures are extremely effective and safe at correcting your vision. While SMILE is another option in laser eye surgery, accuracy of correction is similar to LASIK. During your consultation we will help you determine if SMILE will help you achieve the visual results you desire.

“In addition to predictable results and excellent visual outcomes, the SMILE procedure allows for fast visual recovery.”

SMILE questions? We've got answers.

Does insurance cover SMILE?

No. SMILE is a laser eye surgery that has a lot in common with LASIK. One of those commonalities is being considered an elective procedure. However, your HSA or FSA can be used for SMILE.

Does SMILE wear off?

No. If you are age 47 or older, your eyes might change as a result of aging. This occurs whether you’ve had SMILE or not. During your consultation, we will determine whether SMILE is right for you.

Does SMILE hurt?

No. You will not feel any discomfort during your SMILE procedure. We will walk you through every step of the process so there is no need to be concerned.

How long does SMILE take?

The SMILE procedure takes less than 10 minutes to complete. The actual laser treatment lasts only 30 seconds. It is truly a minimally invasive vision correction procedure.

What if I blink or move during SMILE?

Our lasers are designed to limit and also account for movements. Every step of the procedure is carefully monitored. There is no need to be concerned.

Who is a candidate for SMILE?

SMILE is an excellent procedure for you if you struggle with myopia (nearsightedness) and astigmatism. A detailed eye examination is needed to find out if SMILE is suitable for you.

Is SMILE a safe alternative to LASIK?

Yes, since SMILE focuses only on a sublayer of the cornea, there is only a very small incision on the surface of the eye. This reshapes your cornea, correcting any refractive errors.

When can I return to work after SMILE?

Most of our SMILE patients are back to work the very next day without skipping a beat. The vision itself is usually 20/20 or better the next day and continues to clear even more over the next few weeks.

Can I Use My HSA or FSA for SMILE?

SMILE is a Health Savings Account or Flexible Spending Account procedure. If your company offers a health or flexible spending account you can use pre-tax money to pay for SMILE.
